Wine & Spirits Merchant
Ellis Wharton Wines are a B Corp Certified, award-winning Wine Merchant in the heart of Cornwall selling an interesting and unique selection of wines and spirits to both trade and to retail customers. We have chosen the following five sustainable pathways to focus on over the next three years from our 2023 Environmental Impact Report.
CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION
In House Deliveries:
Vans to be kept serviced and routes planned to keep journeys as short as possible and correct size vehicle selected for each delivery. Look to offset carbon in the next three years.
Not currently viable for our fleet to be electric due to range limitations of current tech. We commit to monitor this. Once electric capable of full days driving, we commit to change whole fleet over.
Outsourced Deliveries:
Partner selected due to their industry leading Sustainable Delivery Strategy. We will continue to monitor to check their standards are being met.
NPD & PACKAGING
As a wine merchant, we only purchase and produce packaging for ecommerce orders and retail single bottle sales. Currently, all packaging used is manufactured using 100% recycled material and is 100% recyclable, biodegradable and compostable.
A large amount of our wine comes packed in cardboard cases which are 100% reused or small amount recycled locally.
NPD – Alternative format wines – cans, Frugal Pack ‘paper bottles’, BIB. We commit to expand and engage our customer base to remove the stigma of alternative formats in the industry, highlighting the potential of these formats with premium quality wines made thoughtfully.
STAFF WELFARE AND PROGRESSION
We believe all our staff are essential in giving the best customer experience, therefore include all in staff wine training. Our whole team are expected to achieve at least WSET Level 1 and are included in regular tastings. We facilitate monthly staff wine tastings including a communal taste and key information on each wine.
We support our team’s progression and CPD and commit to continue to do so over the next three years.
We aim to invest and facilitate two team events each year.
COMMUNITY
We are committed to and will continue to use local Cornish companies for business supplies where possible.
Majority of customer base is in Cornwall, which has significant carbon saving for our business and them.
Local hire policy in place. We serve our local community and commit to this policy too.
Our chosen community charities we support include the Cornwall Air Ambulance which we believe is essential for our local community.
We recycle our own and customers wine corks with Recorked UK.
DRINKS PORTFOLIO
Our mission statement answers this perfectly – our sourcing strategy has always been to provide fine wines and spirits with an emphasis on small independent growers using organic, biodynamic and sustainable methods, and to educate, challenge and care for all stakeholders. We commit to our mission statement.
The introduction and de-stigmatisation of alternative format wines is essential. We aim to establish and promote these formats to our stakeholders and customers.
HOW WILL WE MEASURE OUR COMMITTMENTS?
As a Certified B Corp, EWWines has committed to measuring and improving our impact across our entire business. Therefore, we will be monitoring as per our commitments.
We will utilise the B Corporation network and fellow Sustainability Charter members to learn and improve our business.
