We have recently launched our new Thirsty Earth Sustainability Programme, which captures the three pillars of Environment, Society and Economy. Each of these pillars has goals and targets associated, to ensure we are accountable for delivering our targets.
We have goals and year one targets associated with all of the above pathways as part of our Thirsty Earth Programme, these include, but are not limited to:
Carbon footprint
Kingsland have committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative, and Net Zero emissions by 2030.
PET label-backing reels to be sent to a specialist facility, rather than sending them to energy from waste and stretch film used on site has moved to 23µ with 30% recycled content.
Bags used for Bag-in-Box wines are now made of a recyclable (EVOH) polymer.
With Australian wine brand, THS, we have removed the equivalent to over 10million plastic bottles out of our oceans.
59% of Kingsland’s company fleet vehicles are now electric and 26% hybrid, and we have installed 20 EV chargers on site to encourage wider use of electric vehicles.
Energy efficient lighting has been installed in both production halls, saving 38 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Kingsland Drinks now purchase all energy from Total who only buy from green suppliers - hydroelectric, solar and wind
Society
KDL and Ten Locks have worked with The Drinks Trust on their annual survey for 2023, which focuses on how TDT can best help the industry and its people in 2024.
Through TDT’s Develop Initiative, Kingsland have funded 5 Level 2 WSET course for people in the industry who would like to upskill and develop their knowledge, helping them to begin and sustain a long-term career in the hospitality industry.
Staff welfare & progression
Kingsland Drinks has a flexible and hybrid working policy in place for the wellbeing of all members and will introduce wellbeing days per year for members, with various activities.
8 Mental Health Champions have been appointed in the business.
Flexible and Hybrid working policies implemented.
74 managers across the business have undertaken a Modern-Day Slavery, Inclusion and Diversity, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination course.
We have implemented a Voice Group to allow our members to have a say in decisions that affect them.
Kingsland Drinks has signed up to the ‘Disability Confident’ scheme to create an inclusive and unbiased workplace for all employees
Ecological care & regeneration
Kingsland will invest £50k per year into local and national charities and community events and initiatives.
Minimum of 80% of our key supply base completed detailed Sustainability SAQ.
Kingsland will support local community initiatives working closely with Bridgewater RHS and Hamilton Davies with a minimum of 20 days working in the community and will donate a minimum of £10k into development of wellbeing in the local community.
Kingsland is working on partnerships with the Drinks Trust on their Equal Measures and/or Develop campaigns to ensure we most effectively promote an inclusive and fair environment by supporting initiatives which provide equal opportunities and stand up against all forms of discrimination, both at Kingsland, and in the Drinks Industry as a whole
Looking ahead, what are the longer-term company goals?
Environment
We are in negotiations to bring clean energy onto site during 2024.
We will be adding to our solar PV array, with 750MW of additional capacity
We will dedicate land to 2 wellbeing gardens for our members including introducing two wildflower zones on-site by Autumn 2024 – project group formed.
Economy
100% of ingredients, wine and spirits suppliers to complete Supplier Sustainability Questionnaire.
Extend the Supplier Sustainability Questionnaire outside of wine and ingredients supply, to include packaging and freight suppliers.
Society
We will dedicate land to 2 wellbeing gardens for our members including introducing two wildflower zones on-site by Autumn 2024
We are in live discussions with RHS to link with schools and support with a bursary
Kingsland will continue our support of individuals with WSET L2 through TDT Develop initiative.
