Nationwide Drinks Distributor
At Matthew Clark we believe in embracing sustainability at every step of the value chain. From growing our range of environmentally friendly suppliers to decarbonising our distribution network, we are committed to making a positive impact on the world around us.
Carbon footprint:
As part of the C&C Group, we are committed to reducing Scope 1 & Scope 2 GHG emissions by 35% and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% by 2030 (versus FY2020). We have pledged to be a carbon-neutral business by 2050. Our emissions reduction targets are grounded in climate science and are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Staff welfare & progression:
Support the sustainability and development of C&C Group's Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) focused on Mental Wellbeing, Physical Wellbeing and Working Parents. In 2023, we will train an additional 100 Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) – we aim to have 1 MHFA to every 20 colleagues by 2024.
Use of renewables:
100% of the electricity across C&C's main sites in the UK and Ireland comes from renewable sources, covering around 98% of our electricity use. C&C installed a rooftop solar array at our Clonmel manufacturing site in Ireland, reducing the site’s carbon emissions by 4% and saving approximately 290 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Waste management & recycling:
C&C Group is committed to reducing waste, improving recycling rates and introducing circular economy practices. We have committed to a 'Zero Waste to Landfill' policy. We implemented our ambitious 'Out of Plastics' projects in 2022, removing single-use plastics from the packaging of our canned products and moving to fully recyclable cardback packaging. We conducted a Circular Opportunities Assessment across our business, exploring circularity in both our manufacturing and distribution. C&C Group is a member of the UK Plastics Pact, working with industry partners to find innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.
Water management:
We have a target to maintain our water efficacy at 3.4hl/hl of product produced year-on-year. We are taking proactive measures at our manufacturing sites to ensure water efficiency including: upgrading can fillers; introducing bottle pasteuriser filler; filtration plant water recovery; upgrading line cooler pasteuriser; and packaging water recovery.
Packaging:
In 2022, C&C Group met its ambitious commitment to be out of single-use plastics (shrink wrap, hi and mid cone rings) in the packaging of our canned products. This was in addition to our can lightweighting project, which further optimised the aluminium material used.
Diversity & inclusivity:
C&C has committed to 'Build a more Diverse, Inclusive & Engaged C&C'. Establishing a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Advisory Group and creating distinct Employee Resource Groups was the first step in creating a better workplace for everyone.
Community focused activities:
We have a 3-Year Partnership with the Big Issue Group focused on: Supporting vendors with immersion and education initiatives; mentoring and practical training; support and skills development; providing opportunities for people to transition into work and mainstream living; and collaborating on joint campaigns, including colleague fundraising initiatives.
Supply chain partners:
C&C Group is working with supply chain partners to ensure that key suppliers are reporting to CDP as a trading requirement and have science-based targets in place. We are supporting our Suppliers in this transition through our Ethical and Sustainable Procurement SteerCo and delivering engagement projects.
