Sustainability is a corporate value at VSPT, and we have been working officially in this field since 2010, enabling us to evolve and challenge ourselves continuously. We have a robust sustainability management model with a huge commitment: Carbon Neutrality by 2050. This commitment requires us to change how we operate and shift towards more environmentally-friendly practices.
We have organised our actions into three areas:
Climate Change area – Conservation & Biodiversity; Renewable Energy; Sustainable Viticulture Conscious Consumption area – Waste Management & Ecodesign; Education & Responsible Advertising; Brands with purpose
Sustainable Progress area – Our People; Responsible Supply; Promotion of Innovation
We have set goals internally or at an official and international level for each of these areas, either voluntarily or anticipating regulatory changes. We have policies, certifications, and memberships that promote protecting our people and the environment and ensure the safety of our products and processes.
Looking ahead, what are the longer-term company goals?
We will measure management in the topics mentioned above as follows:
Carbon Neutrality
Based on our commitment to the IWCA, we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions (GEGs) by 25% by 2024, though a sustained, continuous reduction over time, and following Race To Zero, an initiative we are also part of.
Climate Change area
Conservation & Biodiversity: Our master plan lays out guidelines for forestation at the Tarapacá estate for 2024. Currently, we have over 6ha (in linear meters) planted with over 11,000 native and endemic plants. Meanwhile, understanding the importance of living soils, we began a study with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, which will allow us to restore and promote the life and health of the vineyard soils, and recover the native biota.
Renewable Energy: In line with our commitment to the IWCA to have 20% self-generated and renewable energy in the operations of our total (electric and thermal) consumption by 2024. Currently, we consume 100% renewable electricity in our Molina and Isla de Maipo plants, of which 40% are self-generated. And a 10% of the all Energy.
Sustainable Viticulture:
In 2020, we launched our Agricultural Declaration of Sustainability & Social Responsibility. Its primary purpose is to determine goals and improvements for efficient water consumption. Today, we have high-tech and precision equipment to monitor our annual consumption. Our metric is of maximum efficiency at the operation level: 1L of water/1 L of wine produced.
Conscious Consumption area
Waste management & Ecodesign: Our Circular Economy & Ecodesign Policy sets out challenges for us with regards to bottles and packaging for 2030
• 10% reduction in average bottle weight.
• 100% use of recyclable and/or compostable materials.
• 60% recycled material composition. •100% portfolio with recycling instructions.
Moreover, we decided to stop using PVC capsules in our entire portfolio by 2023 and to launch in the coming months enjoyconsciously.com, a website that provides information for proper recycling.
Regarding waste, we currently manage 99.5% of our industrial waste, earning us the Advanced Level Zero Waste Seal for our Molina Plant, which is awarded by the Ministry of Environment in Chile.
• Education and responsible advertising
• Brands with purpose
Sustainable Progress area: Our People
In 2019, we launched our Diversity & Inclusion Declaration. In this context, our commitment to people is based on respect and appreciation for the diversity of our employees. Our program ‘Be.more’, was born as such, fostering a more diverse and inclusive culture, and it guarantees full participation from people with different realities, stories, and visions. It has four pillars, which we always strive to promote and ensure full compliance of: Non-Discrimination; Diverse, integrated teams; Respect & Dignity; Cross-cutting responsibility. We are proud to report that we have initiated an in-depth revision process of our strategic communities (Molina and Isla de Maipo). Its aim is to outline our proactive commitments to these communities in 2022.
Responsible Supply: Since 2020, arising from our deep-rooted goal for ecodesign, we have organised workgroups with suppliers of glass bottles, capsules, label papers, and beverage cartons. In addition, we certified 27 of our products under the ecolabelling Clean Production Agreement. This ensures that our packaging is 80% recyclable. This includes all of our boxed wines from our domestic brands, Gato, Santa Helena, and Manquehuito, as well as the entire range of bottles from the EPICA brand. By 2022, we intend to collaborate with our cardboard suppliers.
Promotion of Innovation: In 2021, we were recognised by the ESE Business School from the Universidad de Los Andes, together with the MIC Innovation agency, as the most innovative company in the domestic viticultural sector for the third year in a row. This ratifies the work the company has been carrying out with regards to innovation strategy and culture. This year, from the perspective of product development, we continue to focus on emerging trends in the world of wine, such as the rise of ready-made cocktails and wines with reduced alcohol and calories. Among the noteworthy initiatives of 2021 was the launch of the new Gato range: Selección Dulce in Chile, a wine cocktail born to attract consumers with its fruity, sweet profile, lower alcohol content, and more effortless drinkability. And later, given the success and acceptance among consumers locally, it was complemented with the launch of GatoNegro Selección Dulce Blanco.
